Actually, that's not entirely true. Back when I was very young I wanted to be a tennis player, until my lack of skill & athletic fitness forced me to draw a line under it.
Then, as I was already a film fanatic, I considered a career as an actor. However, as anyone who ever saw me perform in a school play could attest to, that probably wasn't going to happen. A director? Yes, I should be a director! After all, I have superb social skills and a far-reaching imagination, how hard could it be for me to convince someone it's a good idea to invest their many millions in my ideas? As it turns out, the answer is very...

One thing I knew for certain though, is that I did want to work somewhere within the world of film. I love film, I have done ever since I can remember, and that, I can assure you, is a fact. I love the way a film can change the way you feel and effect the way you think. I love how it can transport you to the darkest pits of reality & to the furthest reaches of the imagination. I love how it can make you laugh, cry, smile & sneer, and the I love that it can do it all within the space of 90 minutes.
As my love of film grew, so did my awareness of the role critics played within the grand milieu of the industry. Growing up I would listen as regularly as possible to Angie Errigo's film review show on LBC, enthralled by how her opinions could spark such great debate amongst listeners. I would use my pocket money to buy Empire Magazine, strive to see what films I could and then look at how my thoughts compared to theirs. Was I concerned if they didn't match up? To start with of course, but as I learnt more I began to see how this only made things more interesting! I would talk to friends, family, indeed anyone who would listen, about my thoughts & their thoughts, right up until the point they told me shut up or go away. I began to see film criticism as the perfect platform to spark a great debate and even greater understanding of a medium I had grown such a passion for; I was hooked then, and I still am now.
As time has gone by, I have accumulated many great memories of both watching films and of writing about them. I remember the first time I saw Gladiator at the age of 12 and how it opened my eyes to a new world of cinema far beyond the young adult and kids films that had dominated most of my adolescent years. To this day it continues to be my personal favorite; an awe-inspiring blend of visual & emotive power that effortlessly hypnotizes me whenever I see it, or even think about it. I first had a review published in print by my college newspaper and online at university, where I created various blogs that I used as a way of getting my work seen by a larger audience. Thus stirring great filmic debate not just with people I knew, but with people I didn't.
Essentially, that is why I have set up this new blog, as a way to take the debate further and, by extension, my ideas. As a reviewer and aspiring full-time journalist, my work can be found being published by the wonderful guys over at culturefly.co.uk, who I am eternally grateful to for offering me the chance to put my feet on the first rung of what promises to be an almost impossibly tall ladder. Every Monday I will be publishing new posts on here that will discuss any & all aspects of the world I continue to be enthralled and fascinated by.
I'm under no illusions, I'm well aware that trying to build any sort of career within the ubiquitous of film journalism is neigh on impossible. But if films have taught me anything, it's that anything is possible (and no, I don't care how cheesy that makes me sound)!
At the outset, I wish to thank all those who take the time to visit, read, or comment on my posts!
